Barrett Fieldcraft Rifle
Barrett may be best known for its massive .50-caliber rifles, but at the 2017 SHOT Show, it launched one of the lightest hunting rifles on the market. The Fieldcraft bolt-action weighs between 5 and 6 pounds and is chambered for cartridges ranging from .22-250 up to .30-06 (including the red-hot 6.5 Creedmoor). There are also a bunch of high-end features rolled into this little gun, which includes a carbon fiber stock that is bedded to the action; a spiral bolt made from 4140 heat-treated, NP3-coated steel; and a 416 stainless steel barrel and receiver. The long and short actions are both scaled to caliber, and the trigger is every bit as crisp and as clean as you’d hope. If you’re a serious mountain hunter who demands a lot from yourself and your gun, then this is the rifle for you. ($1,799; Barrett.net)
The annual SHOT Show in Las Vegas serves as a stage for gun companies to introduce new products for the new year. This year’s crop of new centerfires includes a little bit of everything, from light mountain-hunting guns to heavy target rifles with features that appeal to long-range shooters. Here’s a look at some of our favorite new guns for 2017.
The ABCs of Rifle Shooting by David Watson holds to the idea that shooters should hone their skills and streamline their equipment to achieve the desired results, rather than merely seeking out the newest pieces of equipment.
