The inventor of the Kalashnikov AK-47 rifle, Mikhail Kalashnikov, has died at age 94, Russian officials say.
Mikhail Kalashnikov: “I created a weapon to defend the fatherland's borders”
The automatic rifle he designed became one of the world's most familiar and widely used weapons.
Its comparative simplicity made it cheap to manufacture, as well as reliable and easy to maintain.
Although honoured by the state, Kalashnikov made little money from his gun. He once said he would have been better off designing a lawn mower.
Kalashnikov was admitted to hospital with internal bleeding in November.
Matching the Germans
Mikhail Timofeyevich Kalashnikov was born on 10 November 1919 in western Siberia, one of 18 children.
In 1938, he was called up by the Red Army and his design skills were used to improve the effectiveness of weapons and equipment used by Soviet tank regiments.

He designed the machine gun after being asked by a fellow soldier why the Russians could not come up with a gun that would match the ones used by the Germans.
Work on the AK47 was completed in 1947, and two years later the gun was adopted by the Soviet army. (Source: BBC News)

AK47: The Complete Kalashnikov Family of Rifles
Kalishnikov has often been vilified both by right wing extremists and by the anti-gun crowd as well but he helped invent the AK47 when the German Nazi’s were killing every European than got in there way when they invaded both Europe and Russian during WWII. This is why in Russia today he his held in such reverence as they view him as a father who helped protect Russia from its age old enemy’s from Europe such as the Germans, French, and the Swede’s.
Contrary to popular belief Kalashnikov did not invent the AK47 by himself but was part of a team of designers. Also the myth that the AK47 never jams is pure hogwash. Although it does have a 6 to 1 ration in relation to the piston to carrier the gun can and does jam just like any rifle does if it encounters dirt or debris. I proved this once by loading up some 150 grain surplus military bullets and since I had a lot of BLC2 powder that worked in the .308 with his 150 grain bullets I thought it would work well in the 7.62×39 but I was wrong. The powder achieved a partial burn and on the very first shot the gun jammed up because some of the unburned powder granules were left in the chamber after firing and it was not a lot of unburned powder either. I was amazed at just how little it took to jam the gun. Just like the .45acp myth reality was much different in actual testing.
