The wait is over, the Springfield Kuna is finally available with a tri-lug barrel as a factory option!
If you’re not familiar with the legendary tri-lug, this might not be exciting news to you (yet). Most common for 9mm suppressors, but also found in some other pistol-caliber cans, the tri-lug is an extremely simple, robust, and secure method of mounting a suppressor. As the name implies, this system uses 3 lugs to index and secure the suppressor to the host. Since there is no threading and it instead relies on springs and lugs to stay secure, the tri-lug system is not only effortless to mount and unmount, but also basically impervious to carbon lock or suppressor grime.
Designed by H&K way back in 1966, the tri-lug has proven to be one of the best mount systems ever made. Once you go tri-lug for your 9mm suppressor needs, it’s unlikely you will go back to anything else if you can help it.
Springfield’s new Kuna comes with a barrel machined for tri-lug and nothing else. No threads, no thread protector to lose, just tri-lug ready to mount your favorite suppressor. With zero-dollar tax stamps and many FFLs doing suppressor transfers with only an ATF Form 4473, it’s never been a better time to get into the suppressor game.Â
I’ve been shooting and using the origonal Kuna since before it was released and still love it as my go-to PCC. This new version is exactly the same, just with a different barrel that has the tri-lug built in. Ambi controls, soft shooting due to the roller delay system, double-stack/double-feed Kuna magazines, fold-down back-up iron sights, the Kuna is a feature-packed PCC that delivers.
Testing this new tri-lug model was done using the Shadow Systems HS923 suppressor with the factory tri-lug adaptor. Everything performed exactly as it should. Easy to mount, easy to take off, and stays rock solid without any need for Rocksett. Since the Kuna uses a barrel with tri-lug machined into it, this is as secure as it gets.
The bad news? MSRP for the Kuna has steadily risen since release. What started as $1,000 for the non-brace version and $1,150 for a Kuna and factory brace a year and a half ago now comes in at $1,179 for the tri-lug non-brace and $1,330 for a tri-lug with a brace. Sadly, everything is just getting more expensive. Firearms aren’t immune to that either.
Street price is slightly lower than MSRP, but not always. While the Kuna was a much better value 18 months ago, the current price isn’t a waste of money. This is still a PCC we recommend in 2026.
The Kuna is one of the best PCCs on the market for the average shooter. Reliable, durable, interesting aftermarket options, and new factory options like the tri-lug version make it a compelling offering. We’ve shot the hell out of ours and loved every version we’ve tried. From FMJ blasting to defensive rounds, suppressed with a brake, or Hollywood quiet with a suppressor and subs, the Kuna runs. Wet, dry, dirty, or clean, the Kuna still runs.
